My Philosophy
I enjoy tutoring because it gives me the opportunity to share my experience to help each student find their inspiration to engage creatively with their studies. Having been involved in academia as both a successful student and an instructor, I have found that at all levels, the success comes from finding a balance between the regimented structure of each class and maintaining a personal sense of freedom, curiosity and creativity throughout. The former is what is technically required to achieve high grades, but the latter is where true learning and growth happens. As a tutor, I am here to help my students navigate their learning process, providing them with clear and effective methods to achieve academic excellence, while encouraging them to develop their creativity, confidence, and problem-solving skills.
How I Work
Many students have difficulty in math and science because they find the subjects overwhelming, and even intimidating. In my tutoring sessions, I generate an easeful and engaging conversation around these subjects to remove this stress and spark my students' creativity. Without the pressure to immediately know the answer, I give my students the time to find their own way of conceptualizing the subject. Their confidence is boosted when they arrive at the solution themselves.
As a tutor, I am here to guide students in their learning, filling in the holes in their knowledge, correcting misguided ways of problem-solving, and most importantly, encouraging them to become successful, independent, and motivated scholars. Beyond the subject matter, I also work with students to improve their their executive functioning, which is fundamental to being successful in school. Some of the ways I do this are by helping students plan their schedule, helping them develop an approach towards initiating their tasks, and importantly, helping them build their study skills.
Equally important to the work we do during sessions is the work students do afterwards. Every session includes a plan for the student to take what we have worked on and be prepared for their studies and tasks ahead. I also try to maintain a dialogue with my students' parents and teachers, when applicable, in order to keep them informed of what we have been working on and to learn what we might need to pay more attention to.
Tutoring Goals
My goal for tutoring is to help students to succeed and become self-driven. I work with each student to develop a personalized approach that fits their learning style and improves their overall academic performance in both the near- and long-term. By working together, I aim for my students to improve skills, build conceptual understanding, build confidence, generate excitement, develop creative thinking, and develop work ethics.
Online Format
Online tutoring sessions are 1-on-1 online lessons – providing more flexibility for students to schedule their sessions. Lessons are conducted through video conferencing on Zoom and collaboration on bitpaper.io - an easy-to-use online visual whiteboard that makes it possible to conduct effective and interactive lessons. It allows me to actively work together in real time with my students and features a video chat, an instant messenger, a visual whiteboard that both my student and I can draw on, document uploads, and the ability to pre-upload lessons and save them afterwards. These features make it seem like an in-person lesson. Importantly, bitpaper.io is totally free for you.
In-person Format
I am continuing to offer in-person lessons for students who need this type of support amidst the pandemic. Lessons are conducted at the student's home and hygiene (i.e. masks, hand sanitization, clean clothing, etc.) is a priority. For some students, in-person sessions facilitate a higher level of engagement, especially as much of the learning in school is online now.
